Description

Once a dusty pathway to plantations along the Mississippi River, St. Charles Avenue evolved into a street where the rich and powerful in New Orleans have lived since the 19th century.  ST. CHARLES AVENUE – OF MANSIONS AND MONARCHS focuses on the history of one of America’s most elegant boulevards and the architects who were responsible for “reminders” of its glorious past.

Hopping on the St. Charles streetcar, the oldest continuously operating streetcar line in the United States, you pass through the Central Business District of New Orleans – the place where fortunes were made, enabling the avenue to thrive.  The avenue became a main street for some of the city’s most historic neighborhoods.  A sign of achieving the “American dream” in this Creole city was being able to hire an architect like Thomas Scully to design one’s mansion on the “The Avenue.”

ST. CHARLES AVENUE – OF MANSIONS AND MONARCHS combines rare film footage and photographs with present day scenes and interviews.  From streetcars to Mardi Gras, ST. CHARLES AVENUE – OF MANSIONS AND MONARCHS remembers the street’s timeless elegance, which is sure to endure as a monument to the American dream.

The program was produced by Peggy Scott Laborde and narrated by WWL-TV anchor Angela Hill.
