New Orleans Fair Grounds Memories

For almost a century and a half the Fair Grounds has been the setting for races featuring such famous thoroughbred horses as Black Gold, Pan Zareta and Tenacious. In 1988 Risen Star won the Louisiana Derby and went on to capture the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. These and many other historic moments are recalled in NEW ORLEANS FAIR GROUNDS MEMORIES.

NEW ORLEANS FAIR GROUNDS MEMORIES will focus on some of the personalities from the more recent past, including Allen “Black Cat” LaCombe. Also featured will be some of the owners, trainers and jockeys that have contributed to the track’s rich history. Joe W. Brown and his wife, Dorothy Dorsett Brown, had a stable of over forty horses at the Fair Grounds. After Mr. Brown’s death, Mrs. Brown continued breeding and running her horses locally and at tracks around the United States for over twenty years.

After the annual meet the Fair Grounds becomes the setting for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, one of the world’s top music events.

Included are rare films and photos, along with interviews, that tell the story of one of America’s oldest race tracks.

Produced and Narrated by Peggy Scott Laborde. Edited by Larry Roussarie.
